SAINT PATRICK PRAY, PRAY FOR ALL, PRAY FOR ME

¿Quien sino yo ilumina la asamblea del monte?

You, who banished the snakes
Throwing them out to the sea,
Forbidding them to shelter in the flesh
Of the man who regrets in good faith.
You loved him fervently,
And converted Macaldus
On a boat with chains and disasters,
After suffering so much moaning.

You, who started a shamrock,
Who placed the hope in greens,
Who gave far in the mountains
A call to magnificent learning.

You, who wore the sun inside your soul,
You, who held the chalice in your hand
And came with the sceptre,
Walking in the wind or the calm...

You, Saint Patrick,
Who had the strength of a thousand soldiers,
The faith of four Celtic counties,
The charity of the surrounding sea
That does not throw its strenuous tides
Against your Christian, brave people.

You, Saint Patrick,
Whose name is saint in my confines
In centuries and distant universes...
The name embroidered in your cloak
Is the holy name of Erin!

Saint Patrick
Turn your glances right away
To the puzzled World that is preparing

[1] Iván Portela (b Santa Clara Cuba, 1944), known as the bard of the Mexican-Celts (Irish and Cornish), writes poetry in Spanish about the Irish and Ireland. He teaches Filosophy, Literature, Mythology in University of “Iberoamericana Campus Santa Fe, México D.F., and has been the radio presenter of his own show “Capsulas de Mitología” in ABC Radio de México D.F.. He has been interviewed by Irish, North American and Mexican publications, and among his published books are La otra cara de Irlanda (México, D.F. 1986), and Cantos de Tir na-Og (México, D.F. 2004), from which this poem has been extracted.

SAN BRENDAN ¿QUETZALCOATL?

Es solo el pasaje que sigue, extraído de Murray, Edmundo, 'Ireland and Latin America' in "Irish Migration Studies in Latin America" November-December 2005 (www.irlandeses.org/murrayintro.htm):

The early links between Ireland and Latin America may have been rather mythical. Some Mexican historians mention the possibility that St Brendan of Co. Kerry (c.484-580) landed on Mexican shores, and the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl was identified as a white-skinned and bearded figure who had visited the region and promised to return. Other legend is that Columbus visited Galway on one of his voyages west and prayed there in the church of St Nicholas. However, there is historical evidence for an earlier visit to Galway by Columbus in about 1477. The first recorded Irish names in Latin America were the brothers Juan and Tomás Farrel, members of the expedition led by Pedro de Mendoza that arrived in the River Plate in 1536 and founded the city of Buenos Aires.

EMBAJADOR BRANGAN VISITA PUEBLA

El pasado 27 de Mayo de 2006,
Hay que recordar que en año pasado fue la primera visita oficial del Embajador Dermot Brangan acompañado de su distinguida esposa Doña Hellen Brown, a la Ciudad de Puebla, con motivo de la ceremonia académica de entrega de diplomas a los egresados de los diferentes niveles que ofrece el “Centro Universitario Irlandés”, acto seguido el Embajador montó una Guardia de honor ante el monumento que celebra a los martires del Heroico Batallón de San Patricio, que se encuentra sobre la Avenida Aquiles Serdán de la Ángelopolis, para posteriormente disfrutar de una comida ofrecida por los directivos de la Universidad a personalidades cercanas a la Institución. Esperemos que sea frecuente la visita del Embajador Brangan a la Ciudad de Puebla.

MUSEO DE LAS INTERVENCIONES

Nuevamente Arturo Ortega Blake presenta su obra "Leif el hijo de Erik", ahora en el Museo de las Intervenciones, el día Jueves 01 de Febrero de 2007, contando con repreentantes de las Embajadas de Suecia, Dinamarca, Noruega y Finlandia, asi como los comentarios de Ana Franco. Entre los asistentes se encontraban: Guillermo Henry (actor, productor, conductor de radio y Profesor de arte dramático), Carlos Mayer (historiador), Read McNally (Ing. en Sistemas y escritor)y su distinguida esposa, Alonso Sordo Noriega (Abogado, Educador y Comunicador), por solo mencionar a algunos. Gracias al Mtro Alfredo Hernández Murillo, Director del Museo, por su apoyo a esta actividad.

PRESENTACIÓN DEL LIBRO DE ARTURO ORTEGA BLAKE

Arturo Ortega Blake prsentó su mas reciente Novela de carácter histórico "Leif el Hijo de Erik" en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de México D.F. el 11 de Octubre de 2006, contando con los comentarios de los Representantes de las Embajadas de Dinamarca, Suecia, Noruega y Por supuesto Irlanda. Así como los comentarios de Read McNally y Luis Valle Soto Mayor. Afortunadamente llegó mucha gente esa noche y el lugar estaba abarratado, pudimos saludar al Embajador Brangan, lo mismo a su distinguida esposa Hellen y a dos bellas señoritas oriundas de la Isla Verde que visitaban México.
